HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU PAY FOR BRANDING?

If you're reading this, you are likely starting to realize the importance of brand image and how it affects your company's performance.

Let’s start off by defining a logo, a brand, and their differences.

A graphic must satisfy four conditions in order to qualify as a logo.

1. It must be a vector graphic meaning it can be resized without losing quality.

2. It must be visible & legible, no matter its size. Simple is better (e.g., Nike, Apple).

3. It should be suitable for use in a variety of media (e.g., print, digital, engraving, embroidery, etc.)

4. It must be unique; your logo should distinguish you from the rest.

A brand is not just a logo with a color palette. The logo, fonts, brand colors, company culture and brand imagery are all tools to build a brand. A brand is:

1. An ongoing strategic effort to establish a desired perception of a company

2. What turns potential prospects into paying customers

3. The key to success and long-term viability

Companies that invest heavily into building their brands consistently outperform the overall market, according to research by McKinsey and Interbrand.

So the question is not “Why is branding important?” – that should be obvious. The question should be: “What is bad branding costing me?”

Followed by: “How much should I invest in my brand?”

Keep it simple-01

Due to its finite nature, time is an important resource.

While it may seem like a designer just ‘draws a logo’ in a few minutes, a logo is actually the final product of an often lengthy process.

A skilled designer has to learn the company & industry, study the competition, plan, budget, and have the design knowledge to pull the design from their mind. It takes a lot of brain power.

EVEN IF a logo happened to take 15 minutes to create; the education, time, effort, and design knowledge that went into that logo was decades in the making.

As with all things, there is a scale & range to the quality of the final product. Let’s use air travel as an example. You could spend less than $100 on a ticket that might get you from point A to point B, or you could spend thousands to rent a top-of-the-line private jet for a much more luxurious travel experience and a guaranteed arrival time.

Branding services are similar to flight options in some respects. Though there are infinite possibilities of varying costs & services, I will try to keep the breakdown as simple as possible.

$500-$1,500

In this price bracket, you will find the united/spirit airlines tickets of branding. They are very affordable, function as they should (but not the most reliable), not the most complete solution, and definitely less unique than other brands. If you need a logo and some brand elements just to have something, you might find what you want in this range.

• It is likely that you will be working with an inexperienced freelance designer

• There is a good chance you won’t be asked any important questions about your needs & wants (if any are asked at all).

• Many design decisions will need to be micromanaged

• In lieu of a brand strategy, branding & direction will probably be determined by a questionnaire and your aesthetic preferences

• Expect a logo design and basic visual identity of decent quality

In summary: there are some solid freelancers in this price bracket when it comes to graphic design services, but don’t expect them to bring high-level strategic thinking.

$1,500-$15,000

The branding developed in this range is more like priority – first class seating on a better airline: You get a lot more for your money, the process & experience will be lightyears better, and the end product will be much more effective.

• It is likely you will be working with a very small firm or a competent branding consultant

• A brand strategy will be developed, most likely on a surface level

• You will be consulted periodically as part of the development process

 • The scope of work may include brand messaging and naming

• You can expect a logo and visual identity system of very high quality that is based on your brand strategy and designed to last

In summary: This investment will provide you with something you can grow with, something that’s sophisticated and high quality, and something you can use for the next 5 or 10 years with minimal maintenance.

$15,000-$75,000

At this point you are shopping for your own private jet: Expensive, but a well engineered luxury that has a seriously powerful engine.

• Your project will likely be handled by an experienced solo consultant and a small team of subcontractors or a high-end specialty firm.

• The brand strategy process is facilitated by a senior brand strategist and likely includes independent research

• Dedicated copywriters work with brand strategists to craft your brand messaging and naming (if needed)

• A top-quality visual identity system that comes with a complete collection of collateral assets

$75,000+

At this price point you’re no longer looking to rent a jet: you’re building a Boeing 747. The companies who invest in this bracket are not reading this, at this level top-of-the-line branding design firms & global advertising agencies are involved. They have large teams of highly qualified and specialized minds working on their projects.

Realistically, unless you are a global brand or regional household company making millions with some stiff competition (which, if you are – we would love to work with you!), this investment is a fantasy.

With all of that being said, we realize that an initial $500-$1,000+ investment may not be a realistic or viable solution for every business – especially one in the early stages of development.

We may not be able to provide direct help with your branding/design needs if this is the case for you & your company. However, we will point you in the right direction if this is the case.

Core Design Sprint – $575

While we STRONGLY suggest developing your brand cohesively, we know it may need to be broken down into different projects. For this reason, we have developed the Core Design Sprint.

This is an intensive one-day design program. I will spend one business day designing a logo, brainstorming brand or product names, and designing a landing page—the focus is up to you.

Will this Design sprint suffice for a large company rebrand? No. Will this get a new company off on the right foot? Absolutely.

2-week brand development – $3,500

Branding early-stage companies and pre-launch companies have become a highly efficient process for us. It’s a very fast-paced engagement that takes three weeks (or less) from start to finish, and at the end you get everything you need to launch your brand. The investment is $3,500 with an additional $3,000 if you also need a website.

1 month brand Advancement- $5,500

Whether you need help developing an already established brand, or you want to completely change your look, this would be the correct choice for you. This month-long journey can get you in-depth brand strategy, naming, brand messaging, visual identity, social media templates, print, and digital collateral suites; including an extensive website.

Complete brand overhaul- $10,500+

Earlier, we mentioned branding is full of varying costs & services. This remains true. Depending on the company strategy, market, business goals, and time required, our design services can easily cost $10K+.

Don’t let that intimidate you though, as we welcome both large and small projects and are ready to work with businesses of all sizes and budgets.
